Turtle Hunters

Alums how has your summer hunt to pick up turtle-type items been? Items are used as door prizes for the House Corporation "Turtle Draw Event” for the new members, and the girls love it! Bring your finds to the ROMPS or the first alum meeting, or arrange with Susan Norman to pick them up. DZ items or anything DZ or pink and green are great, too. New members enjoy decorating their dorm rooms with pink & green (their new favorite colors).

News from Monica Montez

Hi Ladies,

First, a group of us will be going to Su Vino for Wine Tasting this Sunday, August 26 at 1 pm. I am planning on making reservations, so please let me know if you are planning on going.

Su Vino is located at:
7035 E. Main Street Suite 110
Scottsdale, AZ 85251

If you signed up to volunteer for ROMP, you will have plenty of time to come socialize and then head over to the Pi Zeta house. :)

Second, I attended a presentation through my work this past week for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am planning on becoming a "Big" and was wondering if anyone else is interested. We could possibly attend the same volunteer orientation and coordinate events with our "Littles." You can learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters and their wonderful programs and ways you can help at www.bbbsaz.org. If you are interested in signing up to be a "Big," you can do so by following this link: http://www.bbbsaz.org/site/c.bkLWKhOTLfK2E/b.6561857/k.E204/Volunteer_to_start_something.htm

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free e-mail me at mrsmonicamontez@gmail.com.

I hope you all have a great week!

The Power of Pink

Team Delta Zeta walks/runs again, on October 14 - in this fall's Phoenix Komen Race for the Cure!

Don't want to walk or run? Then sign up for the sleep-in. You can be part of the team without even getting out of bed! It's great for out-of-town friends and family members, too.

Breast cancer is a devastating illness that affects more people than you think. Let's help stamp it out - by wearing pink on October 14. Sign up online at http://www.komenphoenix.org/komen-race-for-the-cure/teams. Click on join a team. Enter the name of our team, Delta Zeta Phoenix Alumnae Chapter, and continue as prompted. It's as easy as that! We need at least ten participants but want many more. So be sure to recruit others. The more the merrier!!

Register online by 11:59pm on August 31st and you will automatically be entered to win a $150 gift card courtesy of the VIP Race Partner, Fry's Food Stores.

Enjoy "Oktoberfest" food and fun but can't get to Munich this year? Celebrate it right here in Litchfield Park with great friends: DZ sisters and Sigma Kappa alums! Watch for details for this October 6th event.

DZ's On the Move

Jane Prall is moving to the Montecito retirement complex. Her house sold in six days!

Dia Mundle is relocating to the Bay area.  She says she will continue to be active in Delta Zeta there. We wish her all the best!

Yummy!

Want to spice up this hot weather with a new cookie?
Here's a recipe from Joan Dovilla:

Orange Pecan Crisps

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup butter
1 cup sifted flour
2 Tablespoons grated orange rind
1 lemon rind, grated
1 egg, separated
1 cup finely chopped pecans

Combine egg white with chopped pecans. Set aside.

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolk, and lemon and orange rinds. Shape into 24 small balls. Roll in pecan mixture. Place on baking sheet. Flatten balls to about 1/4 inch with a fork. Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Welcome Back Pi Zetas

Mary Pat Pepping fills one of the "welcome back" bags for the Pi Zetas moving into the DZ cluster at Adelphi. Other Phoenix Alums helping were Mary Peterson, Mary Z. Chandler, and Ann Santos. The reusable bags contained goodies, bottled water, toilet tissue, hand soap, lip gloss, DZ pens, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, mini staplers, and other surprises.

Recruitment Help Needed

Hey, Alums! Hope you've all had a wonderful summer! It's that time of year again, and Pi Zeta is getting everything ready for recruitment. We're expecting to recruit the biggest class yet and would love your help! If you're going to be in Tempe during Labor Day weekend and would be able to help in the back room and with invitations, we would greatly appreciate it. We have been so successful every year during recruitment, much thanks to our wonderful alums. If you're interested, please contact dzphxalumprez@aol.com to get my phone or email info.

Thank you so much!

Your Dues Go Far!

A big thank you to all who have already paid their dues for 2012-2013!

Unlike other expenses, our dues remain the same: $35 for an Active Membership and $25 for a Sustaining Membership. And again this year, we would like to offer a discount for first-time dues payers: just $30 if you are new to our group and have never paid dues to the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter before. (But remember, Pi Zetas who have just graduated were given the gift of free membership to our alum group the first year when they become active in the alum chapter.)

Do you wonder where your dues go? We give gifts to our local Pi Zeta chapter throughout the year, fund a Taco Buffet & Ice Cream Social for the girls, make donations to the Foundation in memory of alums who have passed away, and many other worthwhile activities. Also, a portion goes to Delta Zeta National and to the Phoenix Panhellenic Association to cover our dues for those two organizations. Your dues go far!

At the bottom of the dues/membership form are donation "tickets" to enter you in a drawing. All proceeds from these go to our philanthropy efforts, including our annual scholarship to a graduating senior at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf.

You can pay your dues by sending a check (payable to Delta Zeta Alumnae) to me. Please include the information on the dues form. (If you need one, contact Ann Santos or me.) The donation for the drawing is, of course, optional.

But, I must receive your dues by October 1 to include you in our new directory.

Thanks much!

Meet Our National President

At the recent 50th National Convention, Delta Zeta elected the 2012-2014 National Council. Jeanine Petersen Triplett is our new national president.

Jeanine is a graduate of the University of Louisville, earning a B.S. in Communications and M.S. in Community Development. She is an alumna of the Beta Gamma chapter of Delta Zeta, for which she served as the College Chapter Director in 2006-2008.

She has most recently served Delta Zeta as the National Vice President of Membership. She has previously served on National Council as a National Director and Secretary. Her additional Delta Zeta volunteer roles include chairman of the Activities Committee, New Member Education Committee, and Committee on Values  and Membership as well as Province Collegiate Director and Website and Technology Chairman for the Delta Zeta Foundation.

Jeanine also was a National Field Representative. In 2004, she received the Achoth Award, given to specially selected alumnae who have demonstrated, by long and faithful service, their continued loyalty to Delta Zeta particularly in their local communities.

Help Develop the Future of Delta Zeta's Sisterhood

Ladies,  the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter has numerous opportunities to be involved with our Pi Zeta sisters this fall. Please let Ann Santos know right away if you will help with any of these activities for the 80 or so new members:

  1. Breakfast the morning of new-member retreat (Sept. 15) at 7:30 am at Adelphi. This would just be something basic, like muffins, bagels or pastries before the girls get on the bus to leave for the weekend. Also we can provide snacks for the girls at the retreat.
  2. Dessert mixer after the new member meeting on Nov. 5. This will follow their lesson about alumnae engagement and the ritual of lamplighting.
  3. Second evening of lamplighting on ASU Old Main Lawn on Nov.7. Ritual will last about 30 minutes with the new member class and the actives. Parking available in the ASU Fulton Center parking garage

The goal with all 3 of these events is to improve the amount of engagement Pi Zeta new members have with the alumnae chapter to increase our relations and to show the value in lifetime membership for our ladies.

Sister Update

Hi, Finally in MN-- arrived the 30th, after visiting WA-my sister, then into Canada's Glacier NP, Jasper NP, Lake Louise, Banff NP and Calgary. Beautiful! Enjoy your hot summer and try to stay cool.

Taking On New Challenges

Effective August 1, Susan Norman has stepped down as House Corp president, a position she has held since the Pi Zeta chapter was formed. She has volunteered to represent Delta Zeta as vice president of Phoenix Panhellenic, taking over for Sue Lange Pickles, who resigned due to her family's impending move to the Northwest. We cannot thank both Sues enough for their many years of dedicated and excellent service, and wish them all the best in their new endeavors!
