Success Story!
Ladies,
For the past couple of years, Deb Willey has
organized a fund-raising project called "Finals Survival Kits." She
contacted the parents of the Pi Zetas and offered them a choice of baskets of
items that would help their daughters get through final exams. Proceeds benefit
our annual scholarship for a graduating senior at the Phoenix Day School for
the Deaf. Here is her message after this fall's effort:

The
Survival Kit fundraiser was a whopping success this year totally
because
of the following people to whom I wish to send my heartfelt
thanks
and gratitude. Seriously, your enormous donations made all of
the
difference. You are greatly appreciated!

Delta Zeta Needs Your Help!
We are just about 40 days until the start of the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open! We need to fill 39 shifts, and to date have just 15 on the books. So please sign up before the end of the year. Recruit family, friends, neighbors, co-workers!
PPA has filled just over 50% of all shifts, 333 of the 628. Most open shifts are at 11AM on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They need more volunteers!
Don’t let the holidays be your excuse for not signing up for the Open. Once the New Year hits, the tournament is almost here!
Registration remains the same at www.phoenixopenvolunteers.com. Be sure to designate you are working for Delta Zeta!
So far Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday just have a few shifts still available; basically they are near full. Monday 11am still has a few spots if you need a short shift; it’s a practice day that usually ends early.
Thursday still has a few 730am and 9am shifts; Friday has a few 730am and 8am shifts.
We still have over 50 11am shifts that we need to fill on both Thursday and Friday. Thursday is the 1st round of tournament play and these days golf usually ends around 5pm or 6pm, they always finish before dark.
Saturday a few 8am shifts are still available; There are about 60 11am shifts available. Yes, this is the “green out” and the busy busy day that gives the tournament the crazy reputation on 16. We need lots of help to get the job done!
Sunday has a few 730am shifts and about 60 11am shifts. Sunday is “Family Day” for the Thunderbirds, they bring out their kids. Lots of strollers out on the course and the true golf enthusiasts that want to watch the finals. It really is a great day out on the course and the Super Bowl doesn’t start until @ 5pm.
As a reminder, 2013 goals were set at 65% of membership totals. Sorority must meet 80% of their goal to participate in Continuing Education Scholarships and have at least 2 of 3 Council members volunteer at the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

December PPA Celebration for Charity
The beneficiaries of the 2012 Phoenix Panhellenic Association Celebration for Charity will be the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation and Teddy Bears for the Phoenix Fire Department.
Circle of Sisterhood: The Circle of Sisterhood is a mechanism by which all sorority women can stand together across affiliation, age, color, and creed to make a difference in the lives of millions of girls and women. We can give others an equal chance for rewarding lives and livelihoods through schooling, the learning of a trade, or even a college degree. We need money donations for the charity and suggest at least $1 per sorority member. Help us make change happen today! Learn more by visiting www.circleofsisterhood.org.
Phoenix Fire Department: Firefighters take these cuddly teddy bear friends with them on emergency calls to give to frightened children. We are looking for bears 12 inches or larger! Please bring these furry critters to the Teddy Bear tea event!

Distracted Driving
The Delta Zeta National Risk Management Committee wants you to know that:
In 2010, more than 3,000 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver
and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes
involving a distracted driver. Eighteen percent of injury crashes in 2010 were
reported as distraction-affected crashes. Eleven percent of all drivers under
age 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time
of the crash. Distracted driving involves more than just cell phone use. It
describes any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the
primary task of driving – eating and drinking; grooming; using a navigation
system; adjusting a radio, CD player or MP3 player; etc.
For facts and information on this topic to share with others, please
refer to the MJ Insurance handout on cell phone laws and the U.S. Department
of Transportation’s website at www.distraction.gov for current state laws, facts,
statistics and resources. Please take the individual pledge
to end distracted driving, which can also be found on this website.

Marathon Sister!
From Phoenix alum Carol Sweeney: In the Savannah Marathon, my nephew Dan finished in 2:20 and change... My time was 3 hours, 2 minutes and change. It took me 28 minutes just to get to start line! Estimated 17000 runners. Beautiful day and fabulous course!! Savannah is such a great town!
Founders Day 2012
At our Founders Day "dessert potluck," we
enjoyed many delicious treats. Among them were these cookies, sent all the way
from Louisiana by former Phoenix alum Susan Warner. Here's the recipe if you
want to make your own so you can eat every one:

"Southern Fried Bride's Pleasing Pumpkin
Chocolate Chip Cookies"
(makes 1 dozen)
1/2 stick butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon McCormick pure vanilla extract
1-1/4 cup King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon McCormick pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon McCormick ground cloves
3/4 cup chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray cookie sheet with nonstick spray or
line with parchment paper. In large bowl, add butter and brown sugar. Beat
together until creamy. Mix in pumpkin, egg and vanilla extract until well
blended. In separate bowl, combine dry ingredients: flour, baking powder,
pumpkin pie spice and cloves. Mix well. Slowly add the dry mixture into the
batter in three parts until all of dry mixture has been added. Gently stir in
chocolate chips only long enough to blend in mixture. Scoop the cookie dough by
heaping tablespoons onto cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the
cookies are browned around the edges. Remove cookie sheet from oven and let
cool for 2 minutes before removing with a spatula onto cooling surface. Enjoy!

Founders Day
At the alum chapter's Founders Day observance, a dessert potluck in Chandler on October 20, several area alumnae were recognized for membership milestones. Among those honored was 98-year-old Sarah ("Sally") McCann Goodale Jaeggi, who this year became a member of the Order of the Diamond for 75 years as a Delta Zeta. The five honorees present had a combined 265 years of sisterhood. Representatives from Pi Zeta conducted the tribute to our six founders, and Monica Montez, alum chapter vice president, presented certificates and roses to Sarah, Nora Kabat (65), Millie Homan and Priscilla Owens (50), and Marti Benfield Sauers (25).

Luncheon Opportunity
The Sojourner Center is holding its 11th Annual Hope Luncheon on Thursday, November 8, from Noon to 1 p.m. in the Grand Sahuaro Ballroom at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge. Registration for this complimentary luncheon is at 11:30.
As you may be aware, the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter has donated items to Sojourner for more than two decades, and we held our February meeting there this past year. It would be great to have a Delta Zeta table at this fund-raiser luncheon.
So, if you're interested in attending, please let Ann Santos know by October 22nd.

Race for the Cure
I supported the Delta Zeta Alumnae Team (my walking hat was hot pink with a DZ rose!) in today's Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure to honor all our sisters who have conquered or are fighting breast cancer. I also wanted to remember all those defeated by this terrible disease, especially my aunt, Kathryn Hornick Koch, who waged a valiant fight in the early 1970s. With all the research advances since then, today she probably would have had many more years. Thank you to everyone who has tried to make a difference by supporting any of the various programs to find a cure! I hope more alums and their friends and family members will walk or race with us next year.

Sister Update
My husband Dave and I went to Stevens Point, Ann Santos' collegian stomping grounds in Wisconsin. We were there for a recumbent bike rally last August 10-12! I am standing at the dock near Ludington MI which has the SS Badger ship that crosses Lake Michigan to Wisconsin. Dave is sitting in his dream bike at Stevens Point Hostel Shoppe where the rally took place!

Tickets Fore Charity
The Phoenix Panhellenic Philanthropic Projects
Committee is pleased to announce a new opportunity... a partnership with the
PGA TOUR's TICKETS FORE CHARITY program!
What does this mean? Simply ... SPREAD
THE WORD of our new CUSTOM LINK Support
Panhellenic - TICKETS Fore CHARITY to your friends, family,
co-workers and golf enthusiasts to purchase tickets for the 2012
Charles Schwab Cup Championships 10/31-11/4 at
Desert Mountain Club Scottsdale!
For each ticket purchased through our custom
link, Phoenix Panhellenic Association will receive 100% back.
The program is a fabulous opportunity for a non-profit like us to earn
money to build the Phoenix Panhellenic Scholarship Fund. It is really
that easy, just FORWARD THE LINK. All ticket purchases go through the
PGA, which means you do NOT handle money OR deliver tickets.
Tickets will be distributed directly to purchasers by the PGA by mail or
at Will Call. Should Phoenix Panhellenic Association be a top ticket
seller in the Tickets Fore Charity program, we have the opportunity to earn
"bonus awards" up to $12,000. If each sorority sold only 6
tickets (@100 tickets), Phoenix Panhellenic Association could raise over
$2,000, and so on. Please continue to spread the word and the link
through October 31, 2012.
The 2012 Charles Schwab Cup Championships also has
a need for volunteers to assist at the tournament. The PGA TOUR staff has recommended a number of
opportunities and please note these do not include concession staffing. VOLUNTEER SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FRIENDS OF
PHOENIX PANHELLENIC ASSOCIATION:
Volunteer Services ■ Office Support ■
Uniform Distribution ■ Special Events
Admissions ■ Corporate Hospitality ■ Will Call/Credentials www.volunteers.schwabcup.com
Find us on Facebook - Panhellenic Ticket Fore
Charity for all of the links and information. www.facebook.com/PanhellenicTicketsForeCharity
This is the first year the Charles Schwab Cup Championships will be held
in Scottsdale. This opportunity is an EXTRA philanthropic project for
Phoenix Panhellenic Association, in addition to our annual partnership with the
Waste Management Phoenix Open. We were asked several weeks ago by The
Thunderbirds and the PGA for our assistance. More information about the
Waste Management Phoenix Open will be made available at our 1st Panhellenic
meeting in September. In the meantime, PLEASE save the dates - January 28-February 3, 2013 and encourage
scheduling the tournament as a chapter event in your calendars.
Calling All Turtles!
House Corp needs items for the Turtle
Draw for new Pi Zeta members this fall...anything from turtle jewelry to soaps,
and shelf sitters to night lights, or even pink and green or DZ things. Bring
them to the September 8 meeting or contact Susan Norman for pickup.
Moving Around Town
Phoenix alum Julia Garleb will
soon be living in the Phoenix area – Sept. 9th to be exact. She
has accepted a Coordinator position in the Office of Student Engagement at
ASU West Campus. She has been working at Embry Riddle in Prescott. Julia is our
chapter's Panhellenic alternate.

Turtle Hunters
Alums how has your summer hunt to
pick up turtle-type items been? Items are used as door prizes for the House
Corporation "Turtle Draw Event” for the new members, and the girls love
it! Bring your finds to the ROMPS or the first alum meeting, or arrange with
Susan Norman to pick them up. DZ items or anything DZ or pink and green are
great, too. New members enjoy decorating their dorm rooms with pink & green
(their new favorite colors).
News from Monica Montez
Hi Ladies,
First, a group of us will be going
to Su Vino for Wine Tasting this Sunday, August 26 at 1 pm. I am planning
on making reservations, so please let me know if you are planning on going.
Su Vino is located at:
7035 E. Main Street Suite 110
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
If you signed up to volunteer for
ROMP, you will have plenty of time to come socialize and then head over to the
Pi Zeta house. :)
Second, I attended a presentation
through my work this past week for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am planning on
becoming a "Big" and was wondering if anyone else is interested. We
could possibly attend the same volunteer orientation and coordinate events with
our "Littles." You can learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters and
their wonderful programs and ways you can help at www.bbbsaz.org. If you are interested in
signing up to be a "Big," you can do so by following this link: http://www.bbbsaz.org/site/c.bkLWKhOTLfK2E/b.6561857/k.E204/Volunteer_to_start_something.htm
As always, if you have any
questions, please feel free e-mail me at mrsmonicamontez@gmail.com.
I hope you all have a great week!
Monica
