Super Sister!
At our Founder's Day brunch on October 25, Barbara Nicholson Gallaher was inducted into the Order of the Pearl for 65 years of membership in Delta Zeta. Barbara was initiated into the Alpha Epsilon chapter at Oklahoma State University in 1945. A long-time member of this alum chapter, she lives in the 35th Ave/Thunderbird area. Congratulations Barbara and we wish you many, many more years of DZ sisterhood! Thanks for being such a wonderful example of what it means to be a Delta Zeta.

Wanted! Bears... fluffy and ready to be cuddled!
As of October 27th, our furry family now numbers 14! Last year we donated 70+, so we have a ways to go. If you can’t attend the Teddy Bear Tea on December 4th, make arrangements to deliver your bear(s) or have them picked up at a mutual exchange point! These are for the Phoenix Panhellenic Association’s charity project, donating the bears for local firefighters to give to children in emergency situations such as fires, car accidents, etc. Delta Zeta alumnae contributed the most bears last year; let’s set a new record in 2010!

Pi Zeta Ice Cream Social
The Phoenix Alumnae Chapter hosted an ice-cream social for Pi Zeta's new members on October 25th. The chapter patio was decorated festively for Halloween, and the girls and alums enjoyed their sundaes there.
(From left) Deb Willey, Ann Haggerty, Mary Pat Pepping, Nicole Spurling, Ann Santos and Gina Kruckenberg are ready to scoop! Not shown is photographer Faith Kruckenberg, who also helped by passing out the Halloween treat bags.

Founder's Day Photos
This Founder's Day "Everything's Coming Up Roses"
Phoenix alumnae observed Founder's Day on October 23rd with an "Everything's Coming Up Roses" brunch. Table centerpieces were gift bags containing pink silk roses and other flowers, each alum wore a small pink-rose corsage and program covers showing the six founders also had small pink roses.
Entertainment consisted of a "Kitchen Haute Couture" style show of aprons for every month of the year. Jane Prall, Gamma Zeta, modeled two of her hats and gloves from the 1950's.
Barbara Gallaher, Alpha Epsilon, was inducted into the Order of the Pearl for her 65 years of membership in Delta Zeta. Lorna Green, Alpha Beta, presided over the presentation of a beautiful yellow rose, a certificate of recognition from the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter and a glass candleholder etched with a rose design.
The meeting closed with a traditional Founder's Day ceremony and the singing of "Delta Zeta Lamps Are Burning." It was a lovely morning of a sisterhood.

Orange you glad to be a DZ?!
Phoenix alums didn't wait around for the "Great Pumpkin" to show up before gathering to make Halloween goodies for our Pi Zeta sisters at ASU. Erin Maher provided the idea for the treat bags, Sharon Voeller offered her home for the work session and Arlis Legler, Ann Haggerty, Jane Prall and Ann Santos joined in on the assembly. It was a "fang-tastic" and fun session which passed quickly with all the helping hands.
First Erin and Sharon filled the bags... (Ann was hidden behind the camera but helped to sticker the bags)
Then Arlis, Ann and Jane tied the bags ups!
The final product, ready to be enjoyed by the Pi Zeta's!

A Sisterly Affair
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of one of my sisters from Xi Lambda. She was married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in Agoura Hills, California. There was a total of five sisters, not including the bride, in attendance. We spent the night dancing and reminiscing about the collegiate days. It may not have been long ago, but we miss seeing each other all the same!

Ice cream, ice cream, we all scream for ICE CREAM!
We invite all alums to attend the Ice Cream Bar we are holding for the new Pi Zeta members on Monday, October 25th at 6:30 PM at Adelphi Commons, ASU. We would love for alums to come and interact with the girls (69 this year!) so they know how nice we are! Don't be afraid of the parking situation; we will meet up somewhere and carpool to Adelphi. We need a good showing so please try to join us!

Growing Up
I've been waiting almost three years to hear my daughter correct someone who called her Maddie... "No!.. it's Madeline!" It made me smile (-:

Sister on the Move...
I received an offer for a programmer job for Viking River Cruises in Woodland Hills, CA (near my house in Thousand Oaks) and I accepted. I'm supposed to start there 10/18. My house is rented so I have a friend who is going to rent me a house in Camarillo, which is where my sister lives, even though it is a bit of a commute. I'm excited about the job, not so much about moving.
So, I won't be in the Alum Chapter this year.

We will miss Debbie but we wish you luck!

And so it begins...
The Phoenix Alumnae Chapter meeting on September 18 took place at the home of Dia Mundle, in Chandler. Among the activities was celebration of the September birthdays of (from left) Karen Lange, Mary Z. Chandler, Jessica Hall, Jane Prall, and Lorna Green! Happy Birthday, ladies! Alums came from near and far, including Jessica all the way from Tucson. Now, that's real dedication! We welcomed several alums for the first time, and a few we hadn't seen in quite a while.
We received a HUGE collection of items for our philanthropy projects: toiletries, handbags, and bed pillows. A big thanks to everyone for these contributions.
The next meeting is on October 23, at 10:30 a.m., when we will observe Delta Zeta Founders Day with a brunch at the Beatitudes Campus, 16th Avenue and Glendale. The cost is $13. "Everything's Coming Up Roses" will include the Founders Day ceremony, recognition of 25- and 50-year members, and a fashion show of sorts. Details will be forthcoming. Hope to see you there!

Super September Meeting!
The Phoenix Alumnae Chapter's kickoff meeting is Saturday, September 18th, when we'll enjoy our annual "Sensational Salad Smorgasbord" potluck lunch. The hostess is Dia Mundle, who lives in Chandler. Carpools will be organized, so if you need a ride or can drive, let us know. Bring a salad to share, along with its recipe or directions. Place settings, beverages, and dessert will be provided.
In addition to wonderful salads, we'll "visit" the DZ National Museum, get our Founders Day notecards, and have the opportunity to bid on some great items in our Silent Auction of souvenirs we have picked up during summer travels. If you have something to share, great; if not, just come and see what others have brought back.
But wait, there's more! We also will collect gently used or new handbags, unopened travel-size toiletries, and new bed pillows and towels for the new Sojourner Center, PLUS non-holiday-specific teddy bears for our holiday project.
Is this a busy chapter? You bet, but that's what builds close sisterhood. So, RSVP by September 13th. We look forward to seeing you!

Pi Zeta Sisters on the Move
Heather Watkins is leaving the valley as she has a new wonderful job in San Francisco. She will be on her way there in just a few days. Best wishes, Heather; we'll really miss you!
Rebecca Ensley has relocated to Denver where she has already been asked to join the alum chapter!
An Update from Pat Wells
We had to cancel our Alaska cruise. I'm still being evaluated by the orthopedic doctor. Monday, the doctor noticed that the fracture has moved, and wasn't healing like it should. He said it was a coin toss whether to do surgery or not. His associates agreed. My choices were to have surgery right away, or to cast the ankle, have more X-Rays on Friday to see if there are any changes, then make the final decision on Friday regarding surgery. There is still some damage in that same ankle left from a sprain I had 10 years ago. The doctor could fix that at the same time if we decide on surgery. I decided to cast my ankle, see the doctor on Friday, and make the final decision at that time. I will be glad to have some decisions made and get on with whatever needs to be done!
I am getting really bored...not much on TV. I've read so many books, I'm getting tired of that, and I love to read!! My big event of the days seem to be doctor appointments followed by a trip to Starbucks to get some Chai Tea. That's not Ray's thing, but bless his heart, he knows I enjoy my chai tea, so we head to Starbucks after my appointments. I'm still stuck with my wheelchair, so my mobility is limited. Fortunately, I don't have any pain, more discomfort.

A Note from Katie McCarthy
Sad I won't be making it to the September meeting. It is 2 days before I'm due, and my Mom is coming into town that day. I've actually already been having contractions, so hopefully I'll be taking care of a little one by then(-: "Hi" to everyone, and I'll hopefully see you at the next meeting (-:

Please bring donations to the September or October meeting. If you can contribute any homemade goodies, please let us know that too! Thank you!
An update from Sue Norman
Well finally some good news. The polyp the doctor removed last week although large was benign with no signs of cancer. So gall bladder surgery is still on for Thursday, Sept 2 at 2:30pm. I am counting on it being out patient surgery, but they will not know until they get inside me. So I may be home later that day or in the next day or two. Surgery will be at Scottsdale North hospital—same as before.
I can’t wait for surgery as it has felt like I have had stomach flu for the entire summer. Hope the Labor day weekend helps me to get back on my feet for class and clients by that following Wednesday.
