Two weeks ago I went down to LA for a sister reunion complete with a new legacy, baby Dylann Grace. I love getting together with these beautiful ladies and getting to meet baby Dylann was yet another milestone shared between sisters. Love in DZ.

A major event coming up very soon is the WM Phoenix Open golf tournament on January 30--February 5. As the end of the semester drew near, our Pi Zeta sisters were preparing for final exams. To ease them through this stressful time, the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter provided "Finals Survival Kits" filled with useful items. The girls' parents were invited to purchase them for their daughters, Deb Willey filled the orders and delivered them. Many thanks to all the alums who donated Starbucks cards, etc. and/or $$$ for this project. Proceeds benefit the alum chapter's philanthropy fund.

On December 3, Denise Adams hosted the chapter's third annual "Teddy Bear Tea" and holiday party. Attendees brought 58 teddy bears of various sizes for local firemen to give to children in emergency situations. A new activity this year was Santa's Bazaar, a collection of craft items and baked goods donated by the alums. Proceeds benefited the philanthropy fund. Ann Haggerty received a "golden bear" award for the best holiday hat. A ten-year member award was given to Paige Pawlikow.

Sister Update

Last summer, Randie Boldra, moved from Glendale to the mountains southwest of Denver. "Staunton State Park opens next year and I can't wait to cross the road and explore this beautiful area. Deer, elk, fox, coyotes, squirrels and rabbits have visited the yard, as well as many birds. My favorite is the little Colorado bluebird," she writes.

Randie says she hasn't yet seen the black bear and two cubs that make the neighbor's dog bark. She says her house has plenty of room for visitors and the acre is fenced for dogs.

All the hours we and our friends and families work are "paid" to our Phoenix Panhellenic Association. The result is many scholarships for women attending universities in Arizona. Delta Zetas have received numerous scholarships in recent years. To continue this, we need your help. Remember, when you work one shift, you can attend the Open the entire week for free! So corral everyone you can, and be sure to tell them to sign up for Delta Zeta. Thursday through Sunday needs the most volunteers.

On October 23rd, Pi Zeta sisters, Phoenix alums, family members and guests enjoyed our first-ever potluck picnic to observe Delta Zeta Founders' Day. A large ramada at the SRP PERA Club in Tempe was the gathering place for about 80 attendees. A bubble-blowing contest followed lunch. Phoenix Alumnae Chapter President, Ann Santos, then lighted a candle in memory of Phoenix alum, Lucille Hall Moon, who passed away last spring and presided over membership milestone ceremonies. Gamma Lambda, San Jose State, sisters Dia Mundle and Dianne Coppo were officially made members of the Silver Sisterhood for 25 years of membership. Joyce Hanson Madson was formally made a member of the Order of the Pearl for 65 years as a Delta Zeta sister. Each received a beautiful long-stem pink rose in a vase and a certificate of recognition from the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter. Pi Zeta closed the event with a ceremony about our sorority's six founders, followed by a singing of "Delta Zeta Lamps."

To kick off their Parents Weekend festivities, our Pi Zeta sisters at ASU put together an amazing event at the Hilton Scottsdale on September 30. Almost 400 people (Pi Zetas and their parents, alumnae, and guests) filled a grand ballroom for cocktails, a sit-down dinner, and silent auction and raffle. Proceeds benefited The Painted Turtle Camp, a national DZ philanthropy. Special guest was DZ National President Michelle Smith.

Among the Phoenix alumnae who enjoyed the evening were Sue Norman, Kimber Lambeth, Nicole Spurling, Deb Willey, Mary Pat Pepping and her husband Roger, Lee Ann Witt, and Ann Santos. Gina Kruckenberg, who is Pi Zeta CCD, was of course, a vital part of the program. PZ's new members were introduced, and all the actives introduced themselves in Round Up format. The decorations were fabulous, the raffle baskets were displayed very creatively, and the program was well thought out and interesting. It was an incredible evening!

This is the beautiful view from our 9th floor villa near Lahaina, Maui. We can watch the parasailers float by! If I weren't afraid of heights, this would be fun to try. We plan to stay on the water for a dinner cruise instead. We are already so spoiled and coming back to the arid desert will be a shock!

Sister Leads the Way!

I work as a Registered Nurse at Banner Good Samaritan in Phoenix. I work on the Progressive Care Unite; specializing in Congestive Heart Failure patients. This past week, I was the first nurse to perform Heart Failure Ultrafiltration Therapy at Good Sam. This therapy filters a patient's blood, pulls out excess water and salt and returns the blood to the patient if they are admitted with fluid overload in their lungs and heart. This is a brand-new therapy to the hospital and is usually performed only in the ICU!

During the recent recruitment, our Pi Zeta sisters took 77 new members! This fall's quota was 77. Two of these are Pi Zeta legacies. Of the 11 sororities at ASU, only 5 met quota. Way to go, DZ!

Just under 900 women registered for recruitment, a new record. More than 700 signed bid cards.

I am finishing up my psychology degree this semester at ASU, I am a temp-alum at the Pi Zeta chapter while I take online classes and work part-time in Human Resources at Leslie's Poolmart. Also, this November I will be competing in the upcoming Miss Arizona USA competition.

I am currently looking for sponsors for this pageant. I am seeking sponsorships in the form of service services, like salon, clothing and seamstress/embroidery services. The pageant process is expensive so I am also in need of monetary sponsorships. I receive most of my monetary sponsorships through the advertising opportunity in the Miss Arizona USA/Miss Teen Arizona USA program book. Businesses that market to women can purchase a page ad or half a page ad. This book will be seen by over 500 women; the 150 participants of the Miss and Teen divisions, the audience and family members; mothers, sisters and girlfriends!

If you know of a business that would be interested in marketing to valley women or know of any salons or clothing business, I would love to contact them. Please give me a call or email!

The McRae Agency, a leading boutique public relations firm, has hired Brittany Belsterling as an account associate. As the newest addition to the team, her duties will include crafting press materials to distribute to members of the media, building client-to-media relationships and producing social media initiative and campaign strategies for The McRae Agency’s clients.

A resident of Tempe, Brittany began her public relations career as an intern at The McRae Agency and after receiving her degree became a full-time employee. A member of Pi Zeta chapter, she recently graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in communication. She looks forward to being an active alumna member of Delta Zeta Sorority.

The Pi Zeta Executive Board just returned from the 2011 Norma Minch Andersick Leadership Conference at our founding home, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and what an experience it was!

We had eight women attend the conference: Emily Erwin President, Jenna Lose VP of New Member Ed, Courtney Witt VP of Programs, Allison Smith Secretary, Linda Cieslack Treasurer, Danielle Bushell Risk Manager, Libby Meskill House Manager. In addition to the members of the board Kristina Roman, the recipient of the conference scholarship, was in attendance.

Throughout the weekend we met with women from almost every chapter in the country. We discussed solutions to problems within the Greek system and shared our strategies with the many chapters who were impressed with Delta Zeta at ASU. All the attending women walked away with priceless information on how to improve our leadership and chapter.

The highlight of the weekend was the tour of the Miami University's campus and of National Headquarters. It was amazing to actually be in the presence of the history that has touched all our lives.

During the 2011 National Awards, Pi Zeta was recognized in three different categories: Honorable Mention in Academics, Outstanding Leadership Training Program and Outstanding Event or Celebration. Our commitment to leadership within the Pi Zeta chapter of Delta Zeta is stronger than ever and we are confident that the energy will infect the entire chapter.

I just got back from the Painted Turtle Camp in California, and I wanted to let you know that Delta Zeta is truly giving to an incredible organization. From preparing special plates for the children with dietary restrictions to making a special harness for the children in wheelchairs to do the high ropes course, The Painted Turtle makes sure every child's experience is unforgettable. OH - and they LOVED the turtle pillows!! To all who helped make them - thank you from the Painted Turtle! Every camper receives a turtle pillow and blanket upon arrival, and it is something that they cherish forever. It truly was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to go back - hopefully with a group of us!

Egg Casserole

2 cups plain toasted croutons
1 cup natural shredded cheese
4 to 6 eggs
2 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon onion powder
Dash of black pepper
6 slices bacon

In bottom of greased 10 X 6 X 1-3/4 inch baking dish, combine plain toasted croutons and shredded cheese. Combine slightly beaten eggs, milk, salt, dry mustard, onion powder, and pepper. Mix well. Pour over crouton mixture in casserole. Cook 6 slices of bacon until crisp. Drain and crumble. Sprinkle over top. Bake at 325 degrees for 30-45 minutes. Can be doubled. Serves 6. (I doubled it and baked in 9 x 13 pan!)

Making Plans...

At the board meeting on June 18, alums made plans for the coming year. Pi Zeta reps attended so we all could coordinate our activity calendars. Following the business part, Pi Zeta program chair Courtney Witt showed us how to make "waterfall" greeting cards. We had great fun!

Packing Fun

Adelphi is receiving new flooring this summer, so it was necessary to do some major packing at the Pi Zeta chapter room. On Saturday, June 4th, a group of hard-working alums and several Pi Zetas pitched in during a fun work session to get the room ready. In the process, the wood furniture received a much-needed protective coat and some refurbishing. After all the boxes had been packed, we had a pizza and salad lunch and enjoyed relaxing a bit and catching up.

Phoenix Day School for the Deaf Graduation!

On May 25th, two DZ alums named Ann (Haggerty & Santos) and two named Mary (Peterson & Chandler) represented the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf high-school graduation ceremony. The auditorium was packed with the 15 graduates' families, friends, and guests. Entire families were there to celebrate the happy occasion with loud cheers and applause as the diplomas were bestowed. Of the 15 graduates, 12 were young men, dressed in blue caps and gowns. The three young ladies wore gold.

We presented $500 checks, certificates, and letters of congratulation to Mariah Rogers, who will attend SWCID, the Southwest College Institute for the Deaf, in Texas; and Francisco German, who will attend Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Most graduates of this class are going on to college, a remarkable feat. A blue and gold balloon drop provided a festive finish to the ceremony. I hope more of you will be able to come out for next year's graduation, as this is our alum chapter's major philanthropy, and everyone on our roster should witness it at least once!

We had a nice surprise as we were exiting the auditorium. An attractive woman approached to thank us for supporting the school all these years, and said she is a PDSD staff member who is a Delta Zeta! Stephanie Yeargood lives in Estrella Mountain Ranch (Goodyear), and she would make a wonderful speaker for one of our meetings next year. She was a DZ in Georgia.

All in all, it was a great evening. Thank you all for supporting our fund-raisers this past year so we could present two awards to these very deserving young people.

I am humbled (and surprised) to receive the Phoenix Panhellenic Woman of the Year Award. Thank you for your nomination. When I look at the women who have been named Phx Woman of the Year as well as those who were nominated, I didn't think I had any chance of actually winning. Really, it is an honor! Thank you! I am looking fowrad to using my award (a Nordstroms Spa Massage Gift Card) very soon!!! WooHoo!!!

It started with the "wanted poster" invitations given to this year's graduates during the Taco Salad Buffet at Adelphi in March. The western theme carried through to the Seniors Recognition luncheon on April 16. Each place setting included a placecard with a "cattle brand"-like symbol (alums had Delta Zeta Bar None, and the girls had "Rockin' Pi Zeta"), several bandanna-looking wrapped mints, and a boot- or star badge-shaped chocolate cookie. The Pi Zetas also received a bottle of "bubbles," and a western notepad and "bandanna" pencil topped with a cowboy boot. The alums wore sheriff-badge nametags with their names and the phrase "Phoenix Alumnae Posse." Nametags for the girls were miniature "wanted posters." Napkins that looked like denim were trimmed with "rope" design and red bandanna border. Several of the alums dressed according to the theme. Officers wore white "hats," just like the good guys in those good old days! This year's graduating seniors are gorgeous, talented, and looking forward to the years ahead. We hope they all will become active Delta Zeta alumnae, wherever they are. Dr. Leona Aiken, ASU Psychlogy Department, presented the program on women's health studies, and focused on her research of sun health. Assisting her were graduate students Ellen Yeung and Dr. Stephanie Moser. Numerous alums signed up to be in future research studies. Jane Prall conducted the Seniors Recognition Ceremony. Each girl received an open pink rose, symbolizing the alumna level, and a certificate of recognition from the Phoenix alum chapter. Many door prizes were given out, and everyone went home filled with great food and lots of sisterhood!

On March 21st, several members of the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter trekked to Adelphi Commons to host the annual "Taco Salad Buffet" for our Pi Zeta sisters. Ann Haggerty once again did a fantastic job of organizing the food! Other alums assisting were Cindy McParland, Barbara Gallaher, Mary Pat Pepping, Ann Santos, Sue Norman, Lee Ann Witt, Nicole Farr, and Gina Kruckenberg. These volunteers helped serve 85 Pi Zetas. The girls did a great job of helping with unloading food and supplies, finding parking, setting up, cleaning up, and reloading supplies into cars. As an activity, the Pi Zetas were invited to complete a questionnaire about the alums present. These were placed in a drawing for a turtle "pillow pet" and a darling stuffed turtle with matching tote bag! A big thanks to all the alums who donated $$$ and food, baked brownies, and attended the event.

The fifth annual Taco Salad Buffet, hosted by the Phoenix alums, will take place Monday, March 21st at ASU's Adelphi Commons. A highlight will be the distribution of "graduation bear" invitations to the Senior Recognition Luncheon. There are 27 Pi Zeta seniors graduating in 2011. Each bear holds a personalized, rolled invitation to the luncheon which will be held on April 16th at Aunt Chilada's Mexican Restaurant in Phoenix.

This past Sunday Carol Sweeney took part in Mobile Alabama's 21st Annual Mardi Gras 5K Run. Carol took 2nd place in her age group, 65-69, with a time of 37:59 for 3.1 miles! As Carol said, "Not bad for an older 'young' DZ!" Not bad, not bad at all Carol! You made your sisters proud!

Turtle Power!

Phoenix alums Millie Homan, Randie Boldra, Lee Ann Witt, Ann Santos, Deb Willey, and Gina Kruckenberg and several of our Pi Zeta sisters joined forces on February 26th to create "turtle pillows" for the Painted Turtle Camp, a California site for children with special needs. Pi Zeta provided a sub-sandwich lunch before we all got to work. Lee Ann, Randie, and Ann ran their sewing machines, while the Pi Zeta girls cut out "parts" and pressed them, and Millie, Gina, and Deb did an expert job of pinning! After figuring out some shortcuts, we finished 13 of the 26 in two hours: a successful joint philanthropy project the campers will really love.

A weary group of pillow-makers shows off the finished product. Pillows not completed were taken home to sew another day. They will be stuffed at the camp. What a great joint effort by Phoenix alums and Pi Zeta girls!

Want to enjoy a couple of hours on a philanthropy project with our Pi Zeta sisters? On Saturday, February 26th, from noon until about 3pm, we're joining together to make "turtle" pillows for the Painted Turtle Camp, in California. The camp's staff sends one home with each camper, so they need a steady supply! We will meet at Adelphi, so contact Ann Santos ASAP if you need a temporary parking permit, can bring/use a portable sewing machine, and/or want to help but don't sew. This will be a fun time for alums and Pi Zetas to get to know each other! We'd like a good turnout, so hope to see YOU... So far, a van is coming from Glendale Community College area, and cars from the southwest Valley as well as 3rd Ave & McDowell.

A Soup-er Time!

Phoenix alums from all over the Valley gathered in Litchfield Park on January 22nd for a fundraiser lunch. Cars from Sun City West, Sun City, Surprise, Glendale, Phoenix, Goodyear and Fountain Hills lined streets near Ann Santos' home. We collected dozens of cans of soup and other items for a local food bank, as well as $$ donations for our chapter's philanthropy fund. After testing three kinds of soups, we tickled our palates with a pink-and-green ice cream pie, just perfect for a Delta Zeta function! Them some of the alums assembled Valentines for the Pi Zetas, while the rest of the group created chocolate kiss Valentine mice for themselves. A new face was Debbie Siebels, who lives on the east side and has been here for about four years but hadn't attended any alum activities. We hope to see her often in the future!

The next alum meeting is Saturday, February 19th. Mark your calendar so you don't forget the Hearts and Roses luncheon/meeting. Try to wear something red in recognition of Heart Health Month! Details will be out soon.

Take a walk with me...

I am developing a nutrition program here in Belize. We will start with presenting this to the schools and the parents. Today I walked to the grocery store to get prices for a cost analysis I will be handing out. Take the walk with me.

I started at the outdoor market. The cook at Cornerstone needed some vegetables for the feeding program, so I rode in the small, rickety pickup down the steep hill from Cornerstone to the main part of town where they have a space designated for outdoor market stalls. A few stay open all week. On Saturday there are masses of stalls open. Right now there are about six stalls selling fresh vegetables- a limited selection. Cornerstone has an account with one of the stalls so I sat with them and got prices for carrots, green bell peppers, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, bananas, pineapples, radishes, eggplant and tomatoes. All except the cabbage and fruit are quite sad looking. Belizeans do not eat many vegetables.

I took off from the market to walk to a grocery store. It rained last night, so there are many puddles to navigate. The roads are poor so cars veer to avoid the pot holes. I tread carefully on the side of the road. There is plenty of room. As I pass people they are friendly, they smile and say hello. Many are walking as that is their only transport. There are several cars but not as many as there could be with the population of San Ignacio being the second highest in Belize. I pass a bakery with the fresh smell of sweet bread wafting in the air. I resist. I am determined to lose weight, thus the walk.

I cross the low wood bridge that spans the Macal River. The water is low but clear. The breeze is cool and I am receptive as the walk is making me very warm. It is humid and hot. I stop on the bridge to catch the breeze. Some kids are sitting on a tree branch over the water as they dangle their feet in the coolness. I want to join them but I continue my walk up a slight hill, past the car repair shop and the outdoor BBQ grill right on the roadside- the smell of chicken cooking hits me. I pass a small hut that is the tortilla 'factory.' The window and door are open, I can feel the heat coming out. They have a simple and effective operation. I decide to buy a half pound, and they come to me hot off the press. They are running the rounds of dough through a big piece of equipment that looks like an old wringer washing machine. Steam is rising from it so that is what must also cook the tortillas. That and a table complete the 'factory.' I pass many businesses that look like shacks and old buildings. Dogs bark at me as I pass some of the establishments and houses. Dogs barking could be the theme song and choir of San Ignacio. I didn't mention that when I crossed over the bridge I was now in Santa Elena. This is the bridge that gets covered when the river rises in the rainy season.

Then traffic alternates crossing the steel bridge down the river, at the other end of town- it was built much higher.

The grocery store is a simple affair and one of the largest here. A cement building with rows of shelving. Against one wall is the refrigeration and freezers. The frozen items are meats. I walk all of the aisles as I am looking for nutritious items. I find peanuts, sardines, V8 juice, and Special K bars (the bars may be too expensive for some of the families here). There are cans of vegetables- peas and carrots, corn and tomatoes. They are dusty that I can tell they don't turn over fast. Large sacks of white rice, beans and sugar are available.

On my way home a horse and rider pass me. They are not frequent but you do see the horses tied to the roadside when you leave town- natural lawn mowers.

I get a phone call from Sheree. (Cornerstone has a cell phone for volunteers to use, we pay to put time on the phone). She wants to take Rita and I to lunch and I am all up for that. I wait where I am, downtown San Igancio, for her to pick me up. We go up the hill to Cahal Pech and enjoy the view and each other's company. What a treat!

I encourage you to see the musical "Respect," now playing at the Herberger in downtown Phoenix. What a great two hours of memorable music, and a terrific review of women's advancement from the "I have to do anything to keep my man happy, because he's my life" thought to today's "I'm independent, I love myself, and I can do just about anything!" The four singers are incredible, and the backup band is amazing. You'll really enjoy yourself! -- Ann Santos

Mark your new 2011 calendar for the next Phoenix DZ Alumnae activity: a "soup kitchen" on Saturday, January 22nd. Ann Santos is hosting this event, which will benefit our chapter's philanthropy fund as well as local food bank. Guests are welcome!

Bring a can (or more) of any kind of soup. And, for a $5 donation (proceeds for the alum chapter's philanthropy efforts), you will enjoy a choice of three different soups, crackers/breads and cheese, beverages and a delectable Delta Zeta dessert! When we've finished eating, we'll have a fun "mystery" activity!!

You Just Never Know...

On November 24, my husband and I flew from Phoenix to Wisconsin to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with my family. As we waited our turn to leave the plane in Milwaukee, I noticed an attractive young lady standing near her seat a few rows ahead of us. Then her black shoulder bag caught my eye, because it had shiny gemstones spelling out "Delta Zeta." I quite loudly exclaimed, "Delta Zeta??" When she looked my way and said yes, I gave her a thumbs-up and said, "Me too!" I asked what chapter she was in and she said she had just been initiated two weeks ago at ASU. She seemed surprised when I knew it was Pi Zeta. I asked if she had attended the ice-cream social the Phoenix alums had hosted a few weeks ago, but she had to miss it due to an evening class. I told her I was sure we'd see her at a future event. Just goes to show we should proudly wear something that proclaims our sorority because we never know when or where you'll run into a "sister!" I'm just sorry I didn't learn this new DZ's name.

DZ Sister Passes Away

Frances Kush, 80, wife of longtime Arizona State University football coach, Frank Kush, died November 21 in Tempe. She had been hospitalized for several months due to lupus, then was in rehab as the result of a fall. She was born in Indiana and met Frank at Michigan State University where he was an All-American guard on the football team. Kush was ASU's head football coach from 1958-1979. Fran was initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter of Delta Zeta at Michigan State. According to Phoenix alum Joan Dovilla, Fran was active in the alum chapter in the 1950's and 1960's. The Kushes were married for 57 years and have three sons, all of whom live in the Valley.

Lorna Green

Lorna (Enokian) Green was born in Chicago. She earned a B.S. in psychology a little farther south at the University of Illinois–Urbana campus, where she was initiated into the Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Zeta. Lorna had course work at Southern Illinois University for teacher certification. She moved to the Valley about 25 years ago, got a master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University, and is now principal at Roadrunner, a public school that is part of the Paradise Valley Unified School District. Its K–12 students have serious emotional issues.

She and husband Jerry have two children, daughter Jodi who lives and works on the East Coast, and son Jeremy who was recently married in a fabulous wedding in Seattle!

When she’s not spending 12/6 at Roadrunner, Lorna enjoys reading when she has time, going to plays, and cheering at Diamondbacks and Cardinals games. Oh yes—after being Phoenix Alumnae Chapter president for a record nine years, she took a brief hiatus and now has served as treasurer for several years. She says she enjoys visiting with other alums. But, what you may not know, is that Lorna is, in her own words, “an addict” of The Young and the Restless soap on TV! It’s okay, though, as long as she’s a DZ “addict” as well.

Ann Haggerty

Ann (Fowler) Haggerty may live in Surprise, Ariz., but it is no surprise that she has a pink-and-green Delta Zeta heart! Although she was born in Dyersburg, Tenn., she was initiated into the Beta Kappa Chapter at Iowa State University, where she earned a B.S. in Home Economics.. (That’s why she’s so great at organizing our annual Taco Salad Buffet for the Pi Zetas!) She has also worked in real estate and as practice manager for Arizona Audiology & Hearing. But, she’s now retired and loving it! You might catch her at home, if she’s not traveling with her husband Dennis to visit children and grandchildren, or working at various events at their church in Surprise. Ann says she enjoys being an alum, because it’s “a fun group of gals.” Whether she’s supervising food in the kitchen or helping make things for our Pi Zeta sisters or sorting toiletries for the Sojourner Center or “building a bear” at a Build-a-Bear Workshop, you’ll find Ann at the heart of the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter. (Don’t know when she has time to enjoy her chicken-theme kitchen!) Thanks, Ann, for all you do for our group!
